When I was a kid I really DID walk to school. (Both ways.) It was a small town.
And back in the 1930s, they were walking around in relentless heat. Our triple digits have subsided. We’ve had a couple of milder weeks, but today’s record of 100 from 1936 reminds us how bottomless was that Dust Bowl.
July 25th was the last time we hit 100 around here. It now appears (knocking wood) our number of 100 degree days will stay behind those of the Dust Bowl summers of the 30s.
And that concludes Weather School for today. You may walk home now.
You may have been walkin’ in the rain yesterday, particularly in the northern half of the state where showers with rumbles of thunder popped Monday afternoon.
In places where it rained, Tuesday will start with patches of fog, due to recent moisture, clear skies, and light winds. Sun will be the story the next several days, with temperatures headed back above average – but not into record territory – the second half of the work week into the weekend.
No rain at the Airport Monday. Indy remains at 5.04 inches of precip for August, more than twice the normal total.
That five inches would be higher than the normal YEARLY total to date — if we were in Phoenix. Get this: that city has had 1.57 inches of rain THE ENTIRE YEAR. That’s low, even by their standards.
There is a chance of storms there the next few days. It’s the monsoon season in the Southwest. Six states out West are under Red Flag Warnings because it’s dry and windy.
Meanwhile, another two to three inches of rain could fall in Jacksonville Florida, already soaked with about five inches Monday.
Farther out to sea…I’d like to introduce you to a new Tropical Depression. Number 9 starts the day east of the Leeward Islands, with sustained winds near 35 mph.
It will probably be promoted to a Tropical Storm later today. It’s name will be Issac, and unlike the friendly bartender in the Love Boat, it won’t be good for crusing the high seas. Warnings have been issued across a swath of Carribean islands.
