Hot, hot, hot, hot stuff! (I actually Googled Donna Summer to make sure I had the right amount of “hot.”)
Highs returned to the 80s yesterday, and should stay there for the next week. Temperatures will jump this weekend, but I’ve backed off the 90 degree forecast for Sunday. There are some hints that clouds could start popping Sunday afternoon.
There are still more-than-hints that we could get some much needed rain Monday and Tuesday. The most likely time is Monday night into Tuesday. I think we may have a shot at some severe weather this time, which hasn’t happened around here in over a month.
Been a busy week on the Front Range. Ten tornadoes hit Wyoming and Colorado yesterday. The jet stream is WAY north now, opening the furnace door for us, and driving the slight severe risk today up to northeast Montana, North Dakota, northern Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the U.P. of Michigan, along with New England.
This week’s Drought Monitor still has the worst of the dry weather just north and southwest of central Indiana. Things haven’t changed much. A moderate drought is in place in the southwest corner of the state. The drought is now “severe” from Evansville southward.
A moderate drought also exists from Ft. Wayne back through Peru and Logansport. Must be something about U.S. 24!
Down on the farm, corn condition is rated 59 percent good to excellent by Indiana growers. That compares with 52 percent last year at this time. Last year’s problem was too MUCH rain. Farmers had trouble getting much done in the spring. This year’s dry weather really didn’t take hold until recently, at least in central Indiana.
Ninety-seven percent of the intended soybean acreage has been planted compared with 42 percent last year.
