TODAY’S MAP
NWS TECHNICAL DISCUSSION
...Single digit highs may be all we can muster from about Vincennes to Bloomington to Rushville northward. Combined with a 5 to 15 knot wind, we can expect another day with advisory-level wind chills between -10 and -19 degrees. The surface high center should progress through Indiana rather quickly, exiting off to the east overnight. There may be a brief period of ideal radiational cooling potential from sunset to about midnight, where temperatures could drop quite quickly into the low single digits or negatives. After midnight, southwesterly flow ahead of a secondary trough will promote warm air advection and increasing wind speeds which will mitigate cooling potential. Additionally, mid to high-level cloud cover should arrive from the west during the second half of the night. With this in mind, we sharpened the temperature drop just after sunset and then allowed it to level off before gradually warming up towards sunrise. We kept the northeastern portion of our area the coldest as these locations will be within ideal radiational cooling conditions the longest. && .LONG TERM (Wednesday through Monday)... Issued at 254 AM EST Tue Jan 21 2025 Wednesday into Thursday... After a cold start Wednesday, temperatures will moderate some with southwest flow ahead of an approaching upper trough and surface cold front. Highs will reach the upper teens to middle 20s. However, breezy conditions are expected, which will still make it feel colder than that. Some of the stronger winds aloft will mix down, bringing gusts up to around 30 mph in some areas. Forcing will move in Wednesday night into Thursday as the upper trough and cold front move through. Moisture isn`t great, but once again feel that the colder air moving in will be strong enough to squeeze out some isolated snow showers or flurries, mainly across the northern half of the area. Will go with some low PoPs there. Before the colder air arrives, temperatures will warm into the mid 20s to lower 30s Thursday. Thursday night and Friday... Colder air will move in with high pressure during this period. Low temperatures will be in the single digits over portions of the area Thursday night, but with light winds, wind chills won`t be much different than the air temperature. Highs on Friday will be in the 20s. Saturday into early next week... Uncertainty ramps up during this period. Saturday should be quiet with briefly quasi-zonal flow aloft, but then differences arise in the models on the handling of another upper trough. GFS is more aggressive and brings a surface wave and precipitation farther north into the area. ECMWF is farther south and dry. Ensemble means do bring some precipitation into the area, especially south, so will have some low PoPs Saturday night into early Monday. Highest of those PoPs will be in the south. Temperatures will be warm enough for a mix of rain and snow south with snow north. Confidence in the specifics remains low.
