A big-time storm chugs northeastward Friday and Saturday across the upper Midwest, Great Lakes, and northeastern states. Here’s where the snow and the ice will be the heaviest.
And here’s the computer-modeled radar (via WeatherBELL) showing the transition from later afternoon snow to evening sleet, freezing rain, and then rain after midnight. Why is that? Warmer air will be arriving from “the top down,” so initially liquid precipitation will fall make contact with a surface near or just below freezing. Any given location might see three or four hours of mixed precipitation before the switch to rain as all layers of the atmosphere get above freezing.
