They call this “National Radio Day” because on this date in 1920 the “Detroit News” started a radio station with the call sign 8MK, which has been known for nearly a century now as WWJ in Detroit. It all began as a birthday gift from Detroit News Publisher W.E. Scripps to his son, W.J. “Bill” Scripps, who had asked for a radio set with which he could experiment. I started experimenting professionally when I was 16. Still experimenting.
