Drumstick Dash Indy is one month from today! People (and Darth Vader, if this picture is correct) come from all over to gather Thanksgiving Morning in Broad Ripple. Wheeler Mission owns and operates the Drumstick Dash, so ALL proceeds help the poor. I hope I see you in the crowd, and I apologize in advance for the sweaty handshake. (Here’s the official info from Wheeler Mission) 14th Annual Drumstick Dash! Thousands “flock” to Broad Ripple to run to help the homeless INDIANAPOLIS — The 14th Annual Wheeler Mission Drumstick Dash presented by Huntington Bank kicks off 9 a.m. Thanksgiving Day in Broad Ripple, with thousands of participants and volunteers raising awareness and funds for the homeless. In 13 years, the Drumstick Dash has become one of the largest Thanksgiving Day races in the nation and the second largest run/walks in Indiana. Last year, 19,295 runners and walkers laced up their shoes to celebrate Wheeler Mission’s largest fundraising event. Because of the extraordinary growth of this event, race organizers are capping this year’s Drumstick Dash at 19,500 participants. Steve Kerr, Wheeler’s Chief Development Officer and race organizer said, “We can continue to grow this race, and hopefully will, but our main objective is to offer a fun-filled, family-oriented event where people will want to come back year after year. We want families to make the Drumstick Dash an annual tradition.” Kerr went on to say, “We will continue to work with the existing infrastructure in Broad Ripple and work on parking and accessibility.” If Wheeler Mission hits the goal of 19,500 participants before Tuesday, Nov 22nd, registration will not be available on Wednesday, November 23 or on race day. Race officials are encouraging people to sign-up early. Participants are encouraged to visit drumstickdash.org to see the status of registration. While Drumstick Dash mascot Gerry Gobbler — a 6-foot tall turkey — will make his 14th appearance, there will be a major announcement surrounding Gerry. Word on the street has it that Gerry may be retiring and a new mascot will make an exciting debut. New this year will be a more structured corral system and wave start for various pace groups. Local cover band My Yellow Rickshaw will provide the pre-race concert as runners/walkers are lining up. As always, the Drumstick Dash will offer a 4.5-mile-long course, a 2.75 short course and a free Lil’ Gobbles run at 10:15 a.m. for kids 10 and under. This year will once again feature a Celebrity Challenge, with nearly 20 local media celebrities competing for a turkey trophy to keep for one year.]]>
