Indiana's Weather For Friday

Some September symmetry: the month began—and now ends–with cooler than average temperatures. But there was a Yuge stretch in the middle with warmer-than-average temps. The September temp will end up over 4 degrees above average. Last month was also 4 degrees on the plus side. June and July were also above average, but not by as much. The last cooler-than-average month was May. We’ve had plenty of rain this month, but not as spectacularly stormy as August. Here are the September totals….going into this last day. 5.07″ Bloomington 4.38″ Indy 3.46″ Muncie 3.32″ Terre Haute 2.91″ Lafayette (this one is a below-average total for the month) Another half-to-three-quarter inch of rain could fall before the upper level low finally lifts to the north/northeast later Saturday. You can see the upper low pull away in this series of snapshots via WeatherBell. They show the geopotential height difference from average. The heights approximate the actual height of a pressure surface above mean sea-level. Since cold air is more dense than warm air, it causes pressure surfaces to be lower in colder air masses, while less dense, warmer air allows the pressure surfaces to be higher. Thus, heights are lower in cold air masses, and higher in warm air masses. We’re clearly cooler than average for the moment. The daily sequence starts Friday afternoon and runs through Monday.
