It’s hot. And it’s about average. The typical first 90 degree day in Indianapolis is June 14, and our first one this year may come today. Last year’s didn’t arrive until July, but in 2012 it happened in May.
So: today could be the *first* time Indy has been in the 90s since September 11, when the high was 95. There were 14 of them last year. The average is 14.6.
The terrible twisters last night in Nebraska are part of what will continue to be an active pattern in the northern Plains and Great Lakes states. Those storms are firing around the rim of a ridge of the heat dome that is plopped on top of central Indiana. Temperatures will stay above average through the weekend.
The pattern will buckle enough to let storms slip southward late tomorrow after just north of Lafayette and Muncie, where the Storm Prediction Center thinks a few cells could become severe. We could see some of those storm into central Indiana by later evening Wednesday, and then the chance will continue through Sunday. I think the last week of June all the way up to July 4th will end up with temperatures near or below average.
