We start the hottest week of the year so far with a few scattered showers and storms. It’s not going to rain all day or even in all places, but the chance will remain until about sunset tonight. The biggest chance will be concentrated along the I-70 corridor. The threat – especially by afternoon – is smaller in Muncie and especially in Lafayette.
That is gone tomorrow, with a fresh push of even warmer air. The upper air pattern features a big low digging into the western part of the country, which will help push the jet stream in the east way up into Canada. Thunderstorms could “ride” that ridge, but shouldn’t be any farther south than the Michiana area Tuesday and Wednesday. That will allow plenty of sticky sunshine around here, with the first 90 degrees days of the season.
We had to wait until July for 90 degree weather last year, but how about that summer of 2012? That was the year Indy hit 90 degrees 15 times during May and June. And we were into triple digits by the end of June.
Nothing like that this summer. This week’s heat takes a hit by Thursday, when the pattern buckles enough to allow some daily storm chances through the weekend. Highs will still be in the mid to upper 80s, but all indications show a return to normal numbers next week. It’s possible that the next few days will be our warmest ones through the Fourth Of July.
