The sky will be brighter and the wind lighter today, but our default position is still the same: below normal temperatures. Oh, we’ll be close to average Friday, and maybe a little above it Sunday and Monday. But any hope of stringing together multiple days in the 60s have faded again.
Today’s highs will range from the upper 30s in Kokomo, Muncie, and Richmond to around 40 in Indy and Lafayette. Low 40s are likely in Terre Haute, Bloomington, and Columbus. Morning temperatures in the teens will yield some single digit wind chills. Chills will move through the 20s during midday, and approach 30 by later afternoon. The wind itself will be southwesterly at just 5-10 mph. The peak gust in Indy yesterday was 37 mph. Snowfall amounts were all under an inch yesterday. The .3″ that fell at Indy brings the grand total (counting since July 1) to 55.4 inches. We’d still need another 2.9 inches to claim the all-time biggest snow season.
No accumulating snow in the forecast, but a few flakes could mix in early Thursday morning north and east of Indianapolis, as our next system approaches late tonight. There will be periods of rain tomorrow, with embedded thunderstorms possible in the afternoon and early evening. The Storm Prediction Center maintains a severe weather risk to the western part of Illinois, but not here.
Rain should be moving southeast out of the area pretty quickly Friday morning, leaving much of Friday dry. Unfortunately, rain returns Friday night into at least Saturday morning. I think the northern quarter of the state may be threatened with some freezing rain in that time period, but it shouldn’t be a problem for central Indiana. Sunday still looks good, but not as mild as first expected. (Hoped?)
