Thunder rolled, and over an inch of rain fell overnight in Indianapolis, Colder air is slowly sinking southeastward. Lafayette switched from rain to snow at 6am. Snow totals from around Lafayette to Kokomo and Muncie should end up being 2-5 inches.
The change from rain to snow won’t arrive until around 8am in the Indy area, where final totals could be anywhere from 1-3 inches. An inch or less is expected from Terre Haute over to Bloomington and Columbus. Snow will start and start later at Richmond, where 1-3 inches is also forecast.
The Weather Service is maintaining its Winter Weather Advisory, generally from I-70 northward. This is not strictly for snow amounts, but for the possibility of snow being whipped by wicked winds gusting to 45 mph. There is also a Wind Advisory in place, for all of central Indiana. Both Advisories run until 4pm. That part of Indiana north of Logansport to Marion is under a Winter Storm Warning, and up to 6 inches could fall around Marion, and up to 8 inches around South Bend.
Temperatures tumble today, hitting the 20’s this afternoon, and down eventually to the upper single digits tonight, with sub-zero wind chills. Consider this: afternoon wind chills today will be in the teens, where we had temps in the upper 60s yesterday. Indy’s high of 68 was the warmest reading since October 18 of last year.
And to answer several online questions: this kind of change certainly isn’t unusual for Indiana in March. It was 67 on March 10 last year, and that was followed by four days of at least a little light snowfall.
HIGHS YESTERDAY (If you’d rather live in the past)

Thursday and Friday will be dry, although a few light showers are possible Friday night. Sunday’s looking dreary. Colder, with a few rain and snow showers. I still think St. Patrick’s Day will be dry and cold.
