SUMMARY/SOME NEW TOTALS:
The snow is largely finished, but the travel problems aren’t. A Winter Weather Advisory is in place until 1pm, because of winds gusting to 40 mph behind our latest storm, and the blowing and drifting snow that wind will cause.
We’re now number two, thanks to about two more inches. Overnight snowfall totals averaged two inches in central Indiana. The official Airport measurement was 1.8 inches. That means we are now in the second snowiest month ever. The total for the month is 26.7 inches. The record – from January 1978 – is 30.6 inches. It is certainly possible, with another 1-3 inches expected tomorrow and more snow Thursday and Friday.
There has also been freezing drizzle reported north and east of Indy, where lingering moisture has combined with warmer air above us to produce an icy covering on surfaces that are still below freezing. The mild air is noticeable this morning, but temperatures will fall back into the teens this afternoon, and chills will dip below zero again. At least there will be some sunshine.
Tomorrow’s snow looks to be a two-parter, with some snow in the morning, and again later in the evening. That will be followed by another polar plunge, as more Arctic air barges in. It will be right around zero when you head to work Monday.

Indy total 1.8 inches.
7:00am:
Indy official total is 1.5 inches.
2:30am:
Snow should end between 5-7am around Lafayette, 6-8am around Indy, and 7-9am around Muncie and Richmond. Blowing and drifting snow will CONTINUE to be a factor into early afternoon.
1:00am:
The highest wind gust with the storm so far has been 43 mph, and winds will stay frisky through the morning.
12:00am:
The .2″ of snow at Indy up til midnight means the season-to-date snow total is now exactly 34 inches. That is
25.1 inches for the month. Once we pass 25.2 this will officially be the snowiest month on record since January 1978. Once we pass 30.6…it’s the snowiest ever. (Spoiler Alert: it’s gonna happen.)
STORM PREVIEW:
The gusty wind that moved in Friday afternoon will stay through Saturday, blowing around a fresh two or three inches of snow that will start after about 11pm tonight in the Indy area. The worst of the snow should exit between 6 and 8 am in the western half of the state, and between 8 and 10 am in the east.
Temperatures will rise to the the low to mid 20s overnight and early Saturday, then fall back to the teens by lunch time, and single digits through Saturday afternoon. Wind chills should stay between 0 and 10 above during Friday evening and Saturday morning, then it’s back into the basement, going sub-zero again Saturday afternoon.
Blowing and drifting snow will be a factor into the midday hours Saturday.
Same stuff, different day Sunday. This system will be moving more to the northeast, and may not produce much beyond an inch south of I – 70. In general, another 1-3 inches looks likely. Winds will again get gusty, although not to the same levels as tonight and tomorrow morning.
Here’s a timeline of how the snow may unfold:
