A strengthening area of low pressure will slide through the state in the early morning hours of Tuesday, throwing yet another winter wrench into the rush hour.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in place from 1am- 11am for all of Indiana from the Indianapolis “donut” counties to the east and south. This includes Indy, Muncie, Anderson, Carmel, Fishers, Greenwood, Shelbyville, Blomington, Columbus, and Richmond. These areas could see from 2-4 inches of snow by mid-morning Tuesday.
In other locations to the north and west, including Lafayette and Terre Haute, an inch or two is expected.
The most likely hours for accumulating snow are 2am-8am. A fresh batch of Arctic Air will also arrive just before sunrise, dropping temps quickly from the mid 20s around 3am to the mid teens by 9am. That’s where they will stay all day, along with chills below zero all day.
Just two inches of snow tonight will give Indy the 4th snowiest month on record, and the snowiest month since January 1978.
Here’s a computer model sequence, via weatherbell.com, to give you an idea of how the event should unfold. These are hourly snapshots that start at midnight and end at 9am.
