Today’s trending topics on Twitter are more likely to include “Dennis Rodman” than “Polar Vortex.” Here today, gone tomorrow… Actually the Vortex is ALWAYS there. It’s a whirling system of wind, not a storm. But it has definitely retreated northeastward, compared to yesterday. That means we start with no negativity (at least as far as temperatures) and reach double digits in the morning for the first time since Sunday night. Even the wind chills will get above zero this afternoon! There will be a big spread in temps, with a stationary front cutting through the state. The high in Lafayette, Kokomo and Muncie will only be around 20. Highs will be in the mid 20s in Terre Haute, Indy and Richmond. Meanwhile–nearly 30 today in Bloomington and Columbus!
Let me just come right out and say it – snow is in the forecast today. But if it makes you feel any better, the accumulation should be about 4% of what fell on Sunday. Better now?
That snow would come this afternoon, mainly north of I 70, and could accumulate up to about a half inch in some locations. There is a better shot at snow Thursday afternoon and evening over a wider area, but accumulations also look fairly light. An inch or two in the northern third of Indiana, and about an inch in central Indiana. You will want to keep an eye on Thursday night. It’s possible that as milder air pushes in the higher levels of the atmosphere precip could fall as a liquid that freezes upon reaching the colder ground below. Any amounts appear to be very light, but it could be a little slippery Thursday night and early Friday morning. That wedge of colder air at the surface should warm to above-freezing level Friday morning, and rain chances kick in Friday afternoon and become likely Friday night.
You’ll wake up to rain (and a lot of puddles) Saturday. Up to an inch of rain may fall in central Indiana. Interestingly enough, that about exactly the amount of moisture Indy collected Sunday. The liquid count was 1.12″ inches, which led to 11.4 inches of snow. On Monday morning it seemed you’d be looking at it forever, but it will be mostly memories by next Monday!
