Saturdays have been tricky this month. One week ago today we were measuring rain the way we measure snow in December. Five to seven inches soaked some of the south half of the state. Two weeks ago today several inches of snow fell from Indy northward. Three weeks ago today the first single digits of the season were noted in Muncie and Bloomington after the season’s first accumulating snowfall the day before. So: enjoy today! No rain, no ice, no snow falling, and none on the ground to get in your way. High clouds should start to thicken in the afternoon, but temps in the low 50s will seem mild, given that temps in Indy this month have only gone above 50 four different times. Three of those times happened within the first five days of the month. I still think there is a slight rain shower chance after midnight tonight and into Sunday morning. It mainly threatens locations from Indy east and southeastward. A storm moving from the Gulf Coast states is grazing us on its way to New England by Monday. Our better chance for precip tomorrow comes from an Arctic cold front. It should generate snow showers in the afternoon and evening. Little or no accumulation is expected. Temps will fall during the afternoon Sunday from highs in the low 40s around noon. The front will get into the Lafayette area first, and if you live there, your high will about 40 degrees in the mid to late morning. Once that front is passing, temps will be crashing. We’re down to the teens by Sunday night, and stuck below freezing all next week. Monday and Tuesday will be quiet, although daily snow showers will continue in Michiana. There is a chance of snow everywhere from Tuesday night through Thursday morning. A couple different waves are involved, and the best chances come from very early in the morning New Years Day to late in the evening. An inch or two swath of snow somewhere across the state looks likely at this time. The countdown is on, in more ways than one! INDY ALMANAC: The average high today is 36 and the average low is 22. Records are 65 and -13. The sun rises at 8:05 and it sets at 5:28. PAUL’S PREVIOUS PREDICTION: Yesterday’s high was 47. My forecast was 44. ]]>
