A Wind Advisory is already in place for most of Indiana until 9pm. A High Wind Warning is in place for that part of the state north of of Marion and Logansport. Wind – even outside of storms – could gust to 50 mph in the Advisory area and 60 mph in the Warning area late this afternoon. Even higher wind gusts will accompany severe thunderstorms. Significant wind damage is possible, along with tornadoes. The Storm Prediction Center is predicting a “tornado outbreak with multiple significant tornadoes and widespread damaging winds expected across the Ohio Valley and southern Great Lakes region.” The storms today will be driven by a trough of low pressure in the upper atmosphere and mid-level winds racing along up to 115 mph. Meanwhile a surface low pressure system will be moving northeast through the upper Midwest, dragging a cold front with it. That cold front will be a focal point for a squall line of thunderstorms that are expected to produced widespread wind damage and spin up a few tornadoes. Before the cold front, individual thunderstorms may start spinning at any time, especially in the early afternoon before the line of storms arrives in the late afternoon, as depicted by the attached computer radar simulations, via weatherbell.com. Noon: 1pm: 2pm: 3pm: 4pm: 5pm: 6pm: The storms follow heavy overnight rain in parts of central and southern Indiana that produced up to an inch of precipitation. More downpours are possible today in addition to the severe thunderstorms. The storms will end quickly from west to east, with the threat LIKELY over by 6pm in Lafayette, 7pm in Indianapolis, and 8pm in Muncie. Stay in contact with as many sources of weather information as possible today. Cooler and drier air will arrive late tonight and the first few days of next week with be dry and just a little cooler than average.]]>
