(This is a re-post from 2008. The Editor notes that I took my own advice. The Editor adds I already knew I was going to take it lol.) Happy Labor Day. Mrs. P. saw Mike Rowe being interviewed this morn. He’s the host of “Dirty Jobs” on the Discovery Channel, and he launched a website last Labor Day dedicated to the proposition that Work Is Not The Enemy. I agree, but it’s only human, I guess, to complain about working. My friend at the Steak ‘N Shake drive-thru this morn, for example, greeted me with: “awww…you have to work today?” I guess Mike thinks the mindset should be “want to,” not “have to.”
“All around us, society has slowly redefined what it means to have a “good job.” The portrayals in Hollywood, and the messages from Madison Avenue have been unmistakable. “Work less and be happy!” For the last thirty years, we’ve been celebrating a different kind of work. We’ve been aspiring to other opportunities. We’ve stopped making things. And we’ve convinced ourselves that “good jobs” are the result of a four year degree. That’s bunk. Not all knowledge comes from college. Skill is back in demand. Steel toed boots are back in fashion. And Work is Not the Enemy.”One size doesn’t ever fit all. We need all colors of collars. Any job can be a good job…that’s up to you. And if what you have doesn’t seem so good, the answer’s probably not living in a dark world where you just want to do less of it. The answer is working at finding something better. M’kay? That’d be greaaaaaat. Yeahhhh. Happy Labor Day!]]>
