The first day of the month is the last day of the longest stretch of Summer we’ve felt this year. Heat and humidity hold until a cold front slams into the state early Monday morning. Upper air disturbances kicked off several rounds of storms yesterday, hitting first in the northern half of the state, and setting up big temperatures differences that helped to fuel more storms further south Saturday night. The high in South Bend was only 80. Lafayette made it to 87 and it was 89 in Muncie. And that’s where the afternoon heat stopped, thanks to storms. Meanwhile, places from Indy southward baked under the biggest heat of the year. The high was 96 degrees in Indy, where the record was missed by only one degree. Highs hit 95 in Terre Haute and Bloomington, and 97 in Evansville. The storms brought large hail, vivid lightning, and downpours of rain, including over an inch in the Speedway/Clermont area. More strong storms are possible today. Credit heat and humidity combined with the aforementioned cold front and some more upper air atmospherics. Humidity should decrease during the day Monday, along with cloudiness. Stay safe today and enjoy your Labor Day! INDY ALMANAC: The average high today is 83 and the average low is 62. Records are 100 and 44. The sunrise time is 7:13 and the sun sets at 8:16. PAUL’S PREVIOUS PREDICTION: Yesterday’s high was 96. My forecast was 92.
