Brickyard Sunday in Indy begins with a record low temperature of 51, easily passing the previous mark of 54 that was set in 1971 and tied in 2004. We should cross the finish line in the mid 70s Sunday afternoon. A deep upper level low is roaming the Great Lakes and could spread scattered showers across the northern third of the state this afternoon. Lafayette, Kokomo and Muncie could all see a passing showers, and some showers are likely around Michiana. No rain is expected from Indy southward. That’s good news for the Brickyard, which – just as a function of climate around here – generally faces fewer rain threats than the 500. The worst year for NASCAR weather in Indy was the second year the race was run. Rain delayed the start of the 1995 Brickyard until after 4pm. The next chance of showers and storms won’t arrive until Tuesday and Wednesday, as we finish a cooler than average month with more highs below average. If the forecast holds for Monday it would be the sixth consecutive day below 80, which hasn’t happened since the first half of May. You know – the month with the other Race. INDY ALMANAC: The average high today is 85 and the average low is 66. Record high is 101. We broke the previous record low of 54 from 2004 and 1971.
