Not only did the latest snow (4.5 inches officially) push the Indianapolis grand total higher than last Winter’s entire season – it also puts December 2012 in the list of Top Ten Snowiest Decembers. We’re at number 9 now, but just two more inches would put Indy into the Top Five.
SNOWIEST INDY DECEMBERS (inches)
#1 1973 27.5
#2 1895 21.5
#3 2010 16.6
#4 2000 16.3
#5 1981 15.6
That’s quite possible, with another disturbance moving through Monday afternoon and evening. At the moment it looks like 1-3 inches is likely. Timing is everything in weather, and snow on New Years Eve…. that’s bad timing.
The consistency of Friday’s storm prompted me to name it “Fluffy” online. (If the Weather Channel can arbitrarily name storms, so can Mr. Weatherman.) I say a New Years Eve storm deserves to be “Clark” in honor of the man who’ll be missing from Times Square this year.
Speaking of the ball drop, weather for NYC on NYE is cloudy, with temps in the 30s and a 10-15 mph wind. Shouldn’t be stormy there.
Lake Effect snow brought the biggest one-day total of the season so far to South Bend on Saturday. But once again–Chicago was out of the snow “loop.”
SEASON TO DATE SNOW TOTALS
14.2 Indianapolis
10.7 Evansville
9.1 South Bend
8.6 Fort Wayne
0.9 Chicago
The first few days of 2013 will be quiet and COLD with the first single digit temperatures for Indianapolis since February 2011.
