WET has been the word the last week. Indianapolis has recorded measurable precipitation SIX of the last seven days. No wonder your leaves look like that!
Low pressure above and a warm front at the surface are finally far enough north today to keep rain away. If you want to work on those leaves Mother Nature is opening a two-day window of warm weather. It slams shut with a cold front arriving late night Thursday and highs by Sunday will only be in the 40s.
You hear a lot about the “margin of error” about this time every four years. I definitely was beyond mine yesterday, thanks to persistent precipitation that kept Indy out of the 70s. A record high for Indy IS within the margin today. The present record is 81, from 1963.
Evansville has a good shot at at least tying their record today, which is 82 degrees from 1934. South Bend could also come close. Today’s record there is 79, from 1975.
Tuesday’s rain (as was the case Monday) was heaviest to the north/northwest of Indy. Two days totals in Lafayette were almost up to two inches.
TUESDAY RAINFALL:
1.53″ Lafayette
.89″ Muncie
.49″ Indy
.14″ Terre Haute
Trace Bloomington
Although year-to-date rainfall deficits are still just under a foot in Bloomington, and just over it in Terre Haute….the news is better elsewhere. Lafayette’s deficit is now just under four inches. In Indianapolis it is right around one inch.
SANDY UPDATE:
Tropical storm Sandy is expected to become a hurricane as it approaches the south coast of Jamaica today. A hurricane warning was in effect for both Jamaica and Cuba, although the storm is expected to be only a weak category one hurricane, with winds topping out at 80mph.
Sandy’s projected path would cut across the middle of Jamaica near the capital, Kingston, and the popular north coast resort of Ocho Rios, before passing over eastern Cuba and the Bahamas. It would be in the Atlantic off the US coast this weekend.
INDY ALMANAC:
The average high today is 62 and the average low is 42. Records are 81 and 20. The sunrise time is 8:05 and the sun sets at 6:53.
