Tuesday temperatures will be not-as-cold on both sides of the days. No 20s this morning, and we should just crack 60 this afternoon. That’s still well below the average high.
October has featured only two days so far with above normal numbers, and I don’t see it happening again until the weekend. The weekend warmup will come with a precipitation price. It still looks like showers and storms will be around, and there might be even be severe weather.
Our most immediate weather maker is organizing to the northwest. The quick moving Alberta Clipper cold front will zip through Indy around 2am Wednesday. Expect scattered showers overnight. Any rain should be light. Less than a tenth of an inch is expected.
The rain could hold into the first half of Wednesday morning drive. Temperatures get driven lower tomorrow by the Wicked Wind Of The West, gusting to 30 mph Wednesday afternoon. The winds settle down Wednesday night. The sky clears and the frost returns into early Thursday morning.
Yesterday’s chill produced widespread frost and sub-freezing weather. The Indy Airport did officially end up at 31. The makes it the coldest start since April 11. Bloomington was down to 30. It fell to 29 in Terre Haute, 28 in Muncie, and all the way to 27 in Lafayette.
Still a big disparity in year-to-date precipitation deficits. Indianapolis has it down to 1.31 inches, but it’s closer to 11 and 12 inches in Bloomington and Terre Haute, respectively. Muncie is about 5 inches behind for the year.
The way Indianapolis tracks rain is changing. Today marks the beginning of a two week-long installation of dual-polarimetric radar. Current NWS Doppler radars transmit and receive pulses of radio waves in a horizontal orientation. As a result, the radar only measures the horizontal dimensions of targets (e.g. cloud and precipitation droplets). Dual-polarimetric radar transmits and receives pulses in both a horizontal and vertical orientation. Therefore, the radar measures both the horizontal and vertical dimensions of targets. That should mean better estimation of total precipitation amounts, and *type* of precipitation…such as rain versus snow. During the install central Indiana will be covered by radars from North Webster Indiana’s weather office, as well as Chicago and Louisville and Paducah, and other locations in Illinois and Ohio.
