Two cold fronts play a part in today’s weather story. One weaker front moves through today. This (wind) shifty character will re-direct our breeze from the south to the west through the day. It was also add more wind and clouds to the mix. A few morning showers are possible.
Quiet tonight, then a second, stronger cold front arrives Friday night. Although no severe weather or heavy rain is expected, there will be a good chance of rain and some thunder ahead of and along the front. Behind it: yet another shot of cool air. The calendar and the local weather will be in harmonic convergence for Saturday morning’s Autumnal Equinox.
Our Indianapolis year-to-date rainfall deficit is creeping up again, almost to 3.4 inches. Friday afternoon and evening showers have to potential to add 1/2 to 1 inch to the scoreboard.
It will be another weekend of chilly, but dry tailgating. If the Colts game were actually blacked out…the sky would still be blue’d..out there. Play a real football game in your own backyard. The drinks would be cheaper!
Today is the SEVENTH consecutive day of below normal temps in Indy. That means 11 of 20 days this month below average. Could this be the first below normal month…in months? All signs say “yes.’
If you live in Elletsville, or Martinsville, or Greenwood…I bet you remember where you were ten years ago. On September 20, 2002 several tornadoes struck the state. The biggest tornado rampaged through rural and urban parts of Indiana for 112 miles, becoming the second longest tornado track in Indiana history after the Monticello tornado of 1974.
The long track tornado reached F3 intensity in Ellettsville, Martinsville, and Greenwood, with winds of at least 160 mph. The tornado began in Ellettsville at 12:59 PM EST and roared northeast through Martinsville, the south and east sides of metropolitan Indianapolis, Anderson, and finally lifted near Hartford City, 2 hours and 21 minutes later at 3:20 PM EST.
No deaths occurred, despite $156 million in property damage, 45 schools being impacted, and 130 injuries. The same thunderstorm that produced the long track tornado also produced other tornados. One was an F2 rated tornado that struck near Poseyville, and another was also rated F2 and struck near Monroe City
