The Summer of 2012 is notable for a blistering stretch in June and July that brought triple digit temperatures again and again… and weeks upon weeks with no precipitation.
August was a turning point. Since the first of last month Indianapolis has seen four days where the daily rainfall total exceeded an inch. We could see another two inches by late tonight, especially in the western half of the state.
All that rain will only improve the drought map. This week’s edition shows most of the state still under a severe drought. However, the exceptional and extreme (the two worst) categories are gone. The drought is over in northwest Indiana.
The Storm Prediction Center places almost all of the state under a slight risk for severe weather Friday afternoon and evening, threatening another session of the BMW Championships in Carmel, and the opening of X-Fest at the Lawn at White River State Park. Day two at Klipsch will be fine, with no rain for Staind and all the other acts. Penrod looks painless, with the sky improving through the day, and dry conditions.
If you’re doing the Greek Festival at Holy Trinity I would lean toward Saturday. Tomorrow’s Chinese Festival at Military Park should be fine and fall-like. Below normal temperatures will rule for a three-day stretch starting tomorrow.
COAST TO COAST:
Hot temperatures and high humidity will again push heat index values to between 105 and 110 degrees on Friday afternoon in the Deep South. They will also get some weekend relief.
INDY ALMANAC:
The average high today is 81 and the average low is 60. Records are 98 and 42. The sunrise time is 7:19 and it sets at 8:06. That’s three minutes less daylight versus Thursday.
