There’s some precipitation procrastination today, with the best chances of showers kicking in just about the time you tackle the construction zones this afternoon. Rain still looks likely and steady into the evening and early overnight hours. Good news for your thirsty yard: rain projections are still coming in around an inch through early Friday morning.
That’s not enough to erase the deficit of the month that ends today. The Indianapolis official precip total is 2.56 inches, where it should normally be 4.89 inches. Last year’s May total was 4.97 inches. We’re behind year-to-date by about the same margin, around two and a third inches.
The southern quarter of the state could see some severe weather this afternoon, since it is right along the path of the surface low.
Most of today will be in the 60s, and if we get the high I’m forecasting, it’ll be the coolest day for Indianapolis since a high of 69 on May 10.
And THAT’S not enough to erase another fact. It’s been hot. The average May temperature so far this month is 69.0 degrees. That’s high enough to be the fifth all-time warmest May in Indy.
An interesting trend that started during the Big Heat of March – Lafayette is hotter. They are on track to get the second warmest May in history.
Here’s another factoid: Indianapolis hasn’t had a below normal temperature month since September of last year.
COAST TO COAST:
Beryl is now a post-tropical storm. It did end up spawning a tornado yesterday that damaged over 60 houses in North Carolina. The wildfire in New Mexico’s Gila National Forest is now the larges in state history. The smoke could be seen Albuquerque, about 175 miles away. It’s burning everywhere out West, one way or another. The high in Phoenix today should be around 106, and around 109 tomorrow, which could be record-breaking…even there.
INDY ALMANAC:
The average high today is 77 and the average low is 58. Records are 96 and 36. The sunrise time is 6:19 and sunset is at 9:07.
UV INDEX:
Indy is lower today, but still in the “very high” category at “8.” I think that will be more of a factor in the morning.
POLLEN COUNT:
Good news! Indy is down to “low-medium” through the weekend.
