Another frosty start, with Indianapolis under a Freeze Warning until 9am. Your tulips aren’t suffering alone. Thursday morning Frost Advisories extend as far south as the home of the Masters, Augusta, Georgia. So: wear TWO green jackets. And turn up the heat in the General Lee, Bubba!
The average temperature in Indianapolis so far in April is 55.6, which is above normal in itself, but still lags the average temperature in March! (Which was 56.6 degrees.) That should turn around with a 5 day stretch of above average temperatures centered around the upcoming weekend.
It won’t just be warm this weekend. It will be wet. Expect several waves of showers and storms. It won’t rain constantly, but you will have to double check the doppler. Some big rains are likely. I’ve attached a map of possible precip from through Monday. One to two inches is possible. You better cut that grass today or tomorrow.
And THAT rain amount is just the tip of the iceberg, if you’ll pardon the cold weather reference. Shower and storm chances linger through Wednesday of next week! Did you get the part about cutting the grass?
I think heavy rain will be a bigger threat than severe weather. The upper air support for that looks to stay bottled up in the Plains down to Texas, at least through Saturday. The Storm Prediction does paint a slight risk as close as western Illinois by Saturday.
Speaking of severe weather…remember about a month ago when hail covered I-74 to the southeast of Indianapolis? Same deal, different place: Two to four inches of hail fell from a thunderstorm Wednesday evening passing south of Dumas, Texas, closing a portion of the highway. More storms are in their forecast today.
The Storm Prediction is also saying that the average lead time tornadoes in our country is 13 minutes. That’s from when a tornado is first observed and a warning issued, and when it arrives at a warned location. Thirteen minutes passes quickly, so remember that next time you hear a warning for your location. By the way, that time as more than DOUBLED since 1970. Thank you Doppler radar.
POLLEN COUNT:
The level is “high” today, tomorrow, and Saturday. It looks like the level will rise even more tomorrow with increasing temps and wind speeds.
INDY ALMANAC:
The average high today is 62 and the average low is 42. The records are 86 and 20. Sunrise time is 7:11 and the sun sets at 8:21.
