A FREEZE WATCH is ticking away for Indianapolis and all of central Indiana. The Watch official covers Tuesday night through Wednesday morning, but I think we’ll have another freezing night Wednesday night going into Thursday morning. Indianapolis still hasn’t officially gone sub-freezing since March 10.
The core of the colder air pulls away by Thursday afternoon, allowing us to go back above average again Friday, and stay there through the weekend. There will be showers and storms to work around, although it won’t be constant. A warm front should arrive sometime early Saturday, with a cold front to follow to finish the weekend.
The average Indianapolis temperature so far this month is running at 56.9 degrees. That’s above normal, but it’s barely keeping up with our actual average temp in March, a blistering 56.6. By the way, it looks like we could string together three below normal temperature days this week. That hasn’t happened since March 3-4-5 of this year.
Fun with nine-inch numbers:
9.80″ Snow fall this season (normal is 25.8 inches).
9.70″ Total precipitation year to date.
9.64″ Normal precipitation year to date.
Translation: Way behind on snow – more than compensated with rain so far in 2012.
The Henryville Indiana tornado is part of the first billion-dollar weather disaster of the year. NOAA says the March 2-3 tornado outbreak in the Midwest and Southeast killed 41 and caused 1.5 billion dollars in damage. The global reinsurance company AON Bernfield puts the damage at 2 billion.
The Leap Day tornadoes in Illinois and southwest Indiana are responsible for 475 million of damage, which could easily be matched by the tornadoes that twisted through Dalls last week.
