Flirting with freezing in parts of Indiana as Saturday begins. The Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories will expire by 9am. The last time Indianapolis was down below freezing was 27 on March 10. If that holds up as the “last” freeze of the season, it’ll be very early. The average final freeze is still a week away – on April 14. The previous earliest last-freeze was March 24, in 1998.
On the flip side, the latest last-freeze ever was May 27, in 1961. Welcome Race Fans!
Welcome Easter Bunny! If you are going to one of the many outdoor egg hunts the biggest problem should just be those aggressive parents. Mother Nature is NOT gonna be pushy today. Just more beautiful blue sky. The Indianapolis Airport has been mostly clear since 9pm Friday night. Since then: either completely clear, or just some thin clouds up above 20,000 feet. That’s up there with the jets, and maybe that’s where your friends or relatives will be today. I’m guessing crowds will easily outnumber clouds today at the Airport.
Those clouds will increase late tonight, and I still think there’s at least a chance of an overnight shower after midnight and before sunrise services Easter morning. This is connected with a cold front. It’ll be followed by a stronger front Monday, with a better chance of showers, although nothing heavy is expected. The overall trend of the forecast is dry, and certainly cooler. Cooler than March was, at least.
Because of that March the lakes in Minnesota (much like the trees and flowers around here) are running an average of about 3 weeks earlier than normal with respect to winter ice.
Another thing running early this year: your nose! Allergy sufferers have been…suffering. I checked the records are found the pollen count for trees in Indianapolis has been either “high” or “very high” since March 13. The outlook remains “high” this weekend.

Here’s some good news. A relatively quiet stretch for severe weather across the country, after the agony of over a dozen Texas twisters earlier in the week. Preliminary numbers show 223 tornadoes in March. The 1991-2010 average is 90. There were 63 in February, versus an average of 29. And January was even worse. A total of 97 twisters, compared to an average of 35.
