Temperatures will be over 20 degrees cooler today, but considering yesterday’s deadly storms to our south, few will probably complain about cold and quiet weather. A cold front moves through the state tomorrow, keeping some clouds nearby, and giving us at a chance of some rain and snow showers. After three days in the ‘fridge, temps will go back above normal Tuesday and stay there for the rest of the next week.
Along with large hail, metro Indy dealt with torrential rainfall Friday. The official Indy rain total was .80″ of an inch, for a total of 5.66″ for the year. We now are a little above average for the year to date as far as total precipitation goes. Snow totals (obviously) are another matter.
Friday’s horrible storms appear historic to me. I’ve been looking through tornado stats and haven’t found such an extensive episode ever in March. Many well-known outbreaks, such as the Super Outbreak of 1974, The Palm Sunday tornadoes of 1965, and last year’s “Super Dixie Outbreak” — all occurred in April.
Of course, tornadoes can occur any time of the day at any time of the year. In fact, ten years ago, on November 10-11, 2002 there were 92 reported tornadoes in Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania south to Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. The death toll was 35.
Next week looks fairly quiet across the country. Here’s to not making any more history any time soon.
