For today: not as windy, but the day does begin with clouds. The trend should be toward more sun as the day unfolds.
In today’s Indianapolis Star video I talk about two things to watch over the next two nights. Of biggest concern is the chance for another freezing rain event tomorrow night into Thursday morning. A storm system approaches from the southwest and will spread clouds back into the state from south to north Wednesday, with precipitation to follow Wednesday night. There is still some uncertainty with respect to what TYPE of precipitation, but there is definitely a chance for ice again.
The other thing to watch tonight would be more pleasant, but a lot less likely. You could see some Northern Lights in places you don’t normally see them, including Indiana.
A huge solar eruption Sunday has sparked the strongest radiation storm in seven years. The geomagnetic storm will last through tomorrow. Scientists say such solar eruptions are followed by a one-two-three punch.
First comes electromagnetic radiation, followed by radiation in the form of protons. Then, finally the coronal mass ejection — that’s the plasma from the sun itself — hits. Usually that travels at about 1 or 2 million miles per hour, but this storm is really moving, at about 4 million miles per hour. That can pull the northern lights further south. But this coronal mass ejection seems likely to be only moderate, with a chance for becoming strong. The worst of the storm is likely to go north of Earth.
And unlike last October, when a freak solar storm caused auroras to be seen around here, the northern lights aren’t likely to dip too far south this time. But it never hurts to look!
