Go ahead, exhale! No more advisories in central Indiana. A cloudy start should give way to sunshine as midday marches on. It’ll still be cold, but temps will barely drop tonight, and we’ll zip back into the 40’s tomorrow. That aforementioned weather break doesn’t last long. Rain and thunderstorms are a distinct possibility Sunday evening into Monday morning, and the Storm Prediction Center already has the southern tip of the state in the area of slight risk for severe storms. The winter whiplash rolls on into Monday, when a cold front joins morning rush hour traffic and drives through the state. A few snow showers are possible midday and afternoon Monday, but the big moisture is gone by the time the smaller temperatures arrive. Overall, a slightly warmer-than-average period starts tomorrow and lasts through next work week.
So.. how much happened last night? My Twitter feed and Facebook Wall turned icy pretty quickly after 8pm Friday. Sleet and freezing rain began just before 8:30 near the Indianapolis Airport. Freezing rain was reported throughout central Indiana. The biggest travel problems I saw seemed to be concentrated around Bloomington and Monroe county. My online reports and Weather Service info indicates that snow and sleet totaled about half an inch to an inch in the Indianapolis Metro.
Snow/sleet totals increase the farther north you are. The powdery snow also drifted a bit. Between one and two inches fell in Muncie, and between two and three inches were reported around Lafayette. South Bend added another 3.5 inches to a snowy week that saw them pull just ahead of the season-to-date snow average. Indy, meanwhile, remains at about 50% of the normal snow number.
INDY ALMANAC:
Average high today is 36, and the average low is 20. Record high is 68, and the record low is -21. Sunrise is at 8:02, and sunset is 5:51.
