About a week ago I happened to glance over at TweetDeck, and noticed several variations of:
–Did you know…?
–Did you see…?
–I can’t believe…!
all with various shortened links.
It was sort of like wading through my Spam DM’s some days, but upon further review it appeared they were legit – all referencing an appearance by me, in “The Onion.” I clicked one of the links, read the story, and sure enough, there “I” was.
The premise of the satire is that Mayor “Greg Ballard publicly announced his city’s thoroughly embarrassing bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympics.” The piece goes on to say “in addition to the mayor’s painfully optimistic comments, the 19-minute presentation featured a performance of the Olympic Hymn by the Marian University Woodwind Ensemble and an appearance by local meteorologist Paul Poteet, who performed a joking weather forecast predicting “clear skies straight through to 2020.”

FAQ: No, I didn’t really say it. I don’t know who wrote it, and I wasn’t aware of it ahead of time.
What I learned: A LOT of my friends/followers/audience read The Onion. I’ve had my share of extra media appearances this year, and NONE got this kind of response.
