My Pet Pals co-host Patty Spitler, singer Jennie DeVoe, and Mister Weatherman were all thrown to the wolves near Battleground, Indiana recently. We taped a “PET PALS” you can see at 10:30 today on WNDY MyINDY TV.
First things first. Wolves are not typically “Pets.” We are aware of that. Actually Patty tells me the difference in DNA between a wolf and a dog is about 0.2 percent. They do appear to share many of the same qualities.
We were at “Wolf Park” which Dr. Erich Klingmann started about 40 years ago to study wolves in an environment that could enrich them, while not endangering them. Patty, Jenni, and I started the adventure by going to Howl Night, when the wolves come to the edge of the fenced in enclosure to peer at the humans on bleachers and howl with them. SRSLY. Hey, it WAS Friday Night.
Saturday Morning: some safety instructions and we’re in! Inside with 5 of the park’s 14 wolves. These particular wolves are generally tame…however…. You can’t make sudden movements. You shouldn’t giggle. Or scream. Don’t pat Wolfie on the head. Start from the jawline. AND DON’T STARE INTO THEIR EYES! Aaaag! They might think that’s a challenge or a threat. But it is hard to look away. Something about those eyes.
Wolves tend to inspect each other by smelling breath. They do the same with humans. So they got a nose-ful of vegetable omelet from the “Hour Time” restaurant in Lafayette. (And of course, coffee.) I got some big licks, and, uh, sniffs. You’ll see it all on Pet Pals!
