A Dense Fog Advisory is in place until 10am Central time for my new listeners this week in “Q102-land.” The Advisory covers the counties just to the north of Ohio River. Patches of dense fog are all over the state today, caused by a very light wind flow, and skies that began to clear completely overnight. The fog will burn off to a sunny day ahead, with above average temperatures from Indiana border to border.

INDY CURRENT CONDITIONS:

Here’s a view of the Costa Concordia shipwreck from space, showing the ocean liner on its side a few days after running aground off Italy’s Tuscany coast. The shot was snapped Tuesday by a satellite operated by DigitalGlobe, a Colorado-based company that takes high-resolution images of Earth. The cruise ship is easily seen through a layer of scattered clouds.

You may hear some thunder this morning from Indy southward, and winds could gust to around 35 mph. Back to our west there is actually a Tornado Watch in place until 8am this morning. It covers southwest Illinois and a good chunk of Missouri. Track the rain on the Huge Radar here. Use interactive radar to pan and zoom and look at watches and warnings anywhere. It can be found by clicking here.

An inch, maybe two, of snow looks likely starting Thursday morning through early evening Thursday. Flurries are possible Friday, but lake enhanced snow will continue in the North, where totals could reach 6″ by Friday night. Chills Thursday night into Friday will fall to the teens and single digits.

Friend passed on this YouTube link of a “20/20″ story from 1986 about tv weathercasters. There’s a few moments with Letterman in front of the Channel 13 weather board, and Sajak at WSM Nashville. Plus: an weather audition tape with The Thigh Master herself.

A section on Minneapolis tv weather gives hints of the still-to-come “tracking/alerting/hyping” era of local tv weather. The Sajak & Letterman clips go back to the 1970′s. If you’re under the age of 30 watching this, it might as well be the 1870′s.

BTW: Now that you’ve seen Letterman doing weather, here’s some sports. Nobody ever mentions that his first “network” appearance was on ABC’s 1971 Indy 500 telecast. (Channel 13 was an ABC affiliate then.) Here’s his big show biz break, although Jim McKay brings him on with the wrong name.

The 2012 Quadrantids is a little-known meteor shower named after an extinct constellation. It will peak in the early hours of Wednesday. The Quadrantids have a maximum rate of about 100 per hour, varying between 60-200. The waxing gibbous moon will set around 3 am, leaving about two hours of excellent meteor observing before dawn. Unlike the more famous Perseid and Geminid meteor showers, the Quadrantids only last a few hours — all or nothing early Wednesday.

Like the Geminids, the Quadrantids originate from an asteroid, called 2003 EH1. Studies suggest that this body could be a piece of a comet which broke apart several centuries ago, and that the meteors you will see before dawn on Jan. 4 are the small debris from this fragmentation. After hundreds of years orbiting the sun, they will enter our atmosphere at 90,000 mph, burning up 50 miles above Earth’s surface. DUCK!

We’ve added the 3rd floor Edison Ballroom… with live music from “The Michaels.” They are an acoustic duo, who played at the event as “Great Scott” last year, and they’re really good. The tradition has been going on since David came to Indy. IIRC it was Program Director Scott Sands‘ idea to perform “A Christmas Carol” that first year. Since then we’ve done the Carol again, the Vacation a few times, several Rudolphs along the way, and I think we did It’s A Wonderful Life? Or did I dream that one?

One of the three performances of Rudolph had to be moved to the WZPL studios at the last minute because of bad weather. Poetic?

Every year we’ve featured local celebs and TV types. This year we were joined by WZPL Alum Julie Patterson from WISH, TV Scott Swan from WTHR, and Jeff Pigeon, the long-time WIBC jock and talk show host, who did a great job of narrating.

Speaking of TV Types–this guy joined us last year and for this picture on the stage of Beef & Boards in 2009.

If it weren’t for the annual Christmas Show I wouldn’t be able to casually post this final picture of me standing next to Kato Kaelin on the stage at Crackers Broad Ripple from 2007. Just a couple of sidekicks.

Christmas started with a Father’s gift long ago, and family still looms large. Even the ones in the family who lose the bank deposits or buy you pink bunny pajamas. So I bring you warm holiday greetings from our family. And I really mean warm. It was 77 in Miami Beach this morn when Mrs. P & I lifted off after a week of celebrating our 30th anniversary. She’s the gift that keeps on giving:) MERRY CHRISTMAS!

The first chart shows you where Blizzard Warnings had been issued as the new work week begins. THIS map, below, is one computer model’s projection of snow depth by Tuesday afternoon. Some areas could have a foot on the ground. Paging Bing Crosby.

Central Indiana highs will peak around 60 mid-late morning, then fall to these numbers by afternoon rush hour. Friday and Saturday will be cooler, but just around average. In fact, we’ll be back a little above normal again by Sunday and into the middle of next week. Right now that means chances of rain Monday and Tuesday, but of course, things could change. Place your White Christmas bets now!

One of Microsoft’s original founders is helping to finance the biggest airplane ever. The Stratolaunch will launch rockets into space from about 30,000 feet. The aircraft will be be designed to operate from a large airport, eliminating the need for launching pads. Allen said it “will bring airport-like operations to the launch of commercial and government payloads.”

You might wanna arrive at the airport about 5 hours early for THAT TSA grope. I wish him luck, but I’m not flying until at least Service Pack 3.

If you ran the Drumstick Dash on Thanksgiving Day you should know the work of Wheeler Mission goes on the other 364 days of the year. When this weekend’s cold snap hit, they were ready. Friday night they had around 90 men sleeping on mats on their floors once they had used up all their beds.

“First let me say how grateful we are that you chose to spend part of your Thanksgiving Day with us at the Drumstick Dash. In its ninth year the Drumstick Dash has grown by 1,085% since that inaugural race in 2003! Needless to say, we are overwhelmed by the community support of this event.

This year alone we grew by 28%. With that kind of growth come some bumps. This year we offered off-site shuttle service from Glendale Mall. Never having offered this service before we had no idea how many runners and walkers would take advantage of the shuttles. Obviously we grossly underestimated the number of people wanting to park and ride, which in turn, caused a slight delay in getting the race started. If you were one of the people delayed by the lack of busses, please accept my apology and know that we’ve already addressed this issue for next year.

Next year will mark the 10th annual event, and we are already working hard to make it the best ever!

Andrea True is dead at the age of 68. When she became famous (in a pre-Kardashian, pre-Paris world) the singer’s past was a whispered novelty. She had worked for years in porn. Today she’d have a reality show. Back then she had a top 5 radio hit. “More, More, More” was everywhere in the summer of ’76.

She never had any more, more, more big hits, and never did any any more, more, more of those films. The song endures in commercials (I just heard it today…for breakfast cereal, maybe?) and it was sampled by the band Len in “Steal My Sunshine,” from 1999.

Her big music break came in 1975 when she filmed a commercial in Jamaica and was not allowed to leave the country with her earnings because of political turmoil. So she stayed and spent her money to finish a recording of “More, More, More,” an instrument-heavy track credited to the “Andrea True Connection.” So: here’s some More. INDIANAPOLIS (Updated Oct. 20, 2011) — INDYCAR will hold a public memorial service to celebrate the life of IZOD IndyCar Series driver Dan Wheldon at 4 p.m. (ET) Sunday, Oct. 23 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The memorial also will be broadcast on www.indycar.com , VERSUS and on several Indianapolis network affiliates.

Wheldon, a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner and 2005 IZOD IndyCar Series champion, died from injuries suffered in a racing accident Oct. 16 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He is survived by his wife, Susie, and two young sons. Wheldon was 33.

Public Schedule
1:30 p.m.: Doors to the Conseco Fieldhouse Indiana University Health Pavilion will be open. There will be two large banners in memory of Wheldon for fans to sign and leave brief messages. A large photograph of Wheldon will be on display, and guests are encouraged to use this location for placement of cards, notes and other mementos for the family. In lieu of flowers, guests are encouraged to make a donation to the Dan Wheldon Family Trust. Donation boxes will be set up in two locations for guests to leave contributions. Seating in the arena will not be available at this time.

2:30 p.m.: General seating opens. Seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis in arena non-floor seats for the general public. Floor seats are reserved for family, special guests and the INDYCAR community. INDYCAR community members are encouraged to bring their hard card for identification. Seating for this group will be on a first-come, first-served basis on the floor of the arena from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Access to the floor will be available via the main concourse stairways through sections 3 thru 17. All seating in and entrance to the arena is subject to availability.

3:30 p.m.: Music, including the Indianapolis Children’s Choir and video presentation begins.

4:00-5:00 p.m.: A Celebration of the Life of Dan Wheldon

Dan Wheldon was a fan favorite for many reasons: his general accessibility, great personality, and his love and respect for The Greatest Spectacle. He was a tremendous ambassador for Indy. He leaves behind a wife, Susie, and two boys. Sebastian is 2 years old and Oliver was just born a few months ago in March.

The two-time Indy 500 champ was in second place earlier this year, behind rookie J.R. Hildebrand approaching the final turn. Hildebrand lost control and clipped the wall. Wheldon passed him, and the only lap he led all day at Indianapolis was the last one. In commenting on the finish he said:

“It’s obviously unfortunate, but that’s Indianapolis. That’s why it’s the greatest spectacle in racing. You never know what’s going to happen.”

Indeed, you don’t. RIP Dan.

Tonight’s Hunter’s Moon is Full but it could be bigger. The smallest full moon of 2011 will be 12.3% smaller than the largest full moon of 2011, which occurred in March.

The difference in perceived size is due to the moon’s elliptical orbit. In March, the moon turned full just minutes away from the perigee of its orbit, or the point at which the moon is closest to Earth. Tonight’s full moon will reach its fullness peak at 10:06 p.m. Indiana time; just a few hours later, the moon will hit the apogee of its orbit, or point at which the moon is the farthest from Earth.

The perigee and apogee of the moon’s orbit change each month, but in March the moon was 221,565 miles from Earth when it appeared to be full; tonight, the moon will be 252,546 miles from Earth when it appears full. If you’re really a dedicated sky watcher you might notice a little difference.

There’s a benefit party Sunday at Visions Sports Pub. It’s for Craig Burton, who is a veteran Indy-area audio/video pro. I’ve worked with Craig the last few years at the Indpls Zoo outdoor concerts.

Craig has stage 3 neck cancer, no insurance, and has depleted his savings. This fundraiser will feature live music inside and outside of the Pub, free food, and door prizes. The Colts game will be on inside, so if you were gonna watch the game anyway, come on by.

Craig tells me some proceeds are now also going to the Nate Byrd fund. Nate lost his life while working as a stagehand at the State Fair last month. Just ten bucks admission. See you at Visions Sports Pub, southwest side. Party goes from 1p-11p. THANKS!

The newest sale at Family Leisure is BIG. The World’s Biggest Spa Sale is REALLY REALLY big. The folks at Family Leisure tell me they actually confirmed it. They notified the Better Biz Bureau last year and the BBB agreed that it can be advertised as the World’s Biggest because of the volume of spas they are committed to during this promotion. Go there and see for yourself. But first, watch this awesome commercial about it. Dig that big voice.

Still a chance of showers across Indiana this afternoon and especially late afternoon and evening. Best chances will be south and east of Indianapolis. This map shows highs today, which are down twenty degrees compared to yesterday in some cases.

I volunteered and donated to the Jerry Lewis Telethon before I ever appeared on TV in one of those wacky/embarrassing/sometimes-uncomfortable “local cut ins.” I popped up many times as Random Radio Guy, then as Random TV Guy the first several years I was on Indy morning television. Even by then the “telethon” was a bit of a throwback, to a time when tv stations routinely did local non-news productions. And a throwback to when the audience knew Jerry Lewis for anything other than…a telethon. You could get always get a lot of mileage out of making fun of the ‘Thon, but at the end of the day (days) that’s a lot of money on that tacky tote board. So good for Jerry. But Show Biz is Show Biz, and no show lasts forever.

The Pioneer Village 50th Anniversary Tractor Parade presented by PNC Bank Agriculture Group is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 21, at the Fairgrounds.

The Harness races that were scheduled for Aug. 18 and 19 have been moved to Aug. 19 at the Shelby County Fairgrounds with an 11 a.m. post time. The Grand Circuit races that were scheduled for Aug. 20 have been moved to Aug. 18 at Indiana Downs with an 11 a.m. post time.

The Cheerleading Competition scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 20 has been moved to the Convention Center downtown.

The Last Blast Fireworks show scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 21 has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

The Lucas Oil Demolition Derby scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 21 has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

The big “H” you see on today’s map will provide a beautiful evening. Forecast over the next few days still looks the same with one refinement: showers/storms should be outta here by Thursday evening. They could start by Wednesday afternoon in northwest Indiana and Wednesday night in Central Indiana.

Rain amounts should remain under a quarter of an inch across most of the state through Thursday morning.

The Indiana State Fair’s Train and Maroon 5 concert, originally scheduled for the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand, has been relocated to Conseco Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis. The show will take place at 7 p.m. this Thursday, Aug. 18.

All previously purchased Train and Maroon 5 tickets for the show at the Indiana State Fair will be honored at Conseco Fieldhouse on the night of the show.

Train and Maroon 5 are donating 100 percent of their performance fee while both the Indiana State Fair and Pacers Sports and Entertainment, who manage Conseco Fieldhouse, are also donating their entire proceeds from the concert to the Indiana State Fair Remembrance Fund.

Furthermore, in order to make this concert possible volunteers from the Conseco Fieldhouse full and part time staff, members of IATSE Local 30 Stagehands, ESG Security, Levy Restaurants and others are all volunteering their efforts to work at this important community remembrance event. The Women of Faith are also to be commended for re-arranging their set up schedule for their upcoming event at Conseco Fieldhouse so that the remembrance concert can take place.
