our Piper the cat about a week ago after a sudden stroke. People are always asking about things I talk about on air/on line, and after another person brought up the cats today I wanted to post and explain why you wouldn’t be seeing any new cat pics. Piper was 13 years old. Long before Pet Pals I used to be involved in a weekly segment on Channel 6’s Noon News where the Humane Society would visit. One week sometime in the early 2000s Piper was the star, and came over to me on the air. IIRC, she started licking my hand. (This went on her entire life. She was a bit canine that way.) Mrs. P was watching and actually called me before the show was over to see if the calico could come home with the weatherman. Piper was notable for her bushy bushy tail that she apparently was very proud of – she constantly flicked it back and forth, lording it over everyone. After our cat Sophie was gone earlier this year she went through a brief period of biting/over-grooming her tail, and it got oddly thin, but she had staged a (come from behind?) recovery recently. Maybe she missed Sophie? They were never really friends, so I am inclined to Mrs. P’s theory: she was afraid we did in the other cat and we were coming for her next, lol. She seemed to step up her sociability in these last few months without Sophie, so you saw much more of her in this feed. RIP Rowdy Calico Piper. Your death was sudden and shocking. You were an amusing companion, and my favorite Channel 6 souvenir. ]]>
