Records indicate the sky was clear in 1492 when Christopher Columbus made landfall on San Salvador Island. (And yes, I was on the air, doing weather cut-ins on “Good Morning To Be Announced.”)
C-squared had good weather luck. Despite making the trip during the Western Atlantic hurricane season, the trip was largely storm-free. Some have suggested that a cold front moving off the Florida peninsula influenced the landing. The theory is that more northerly winds behind the front forced the crew to sail south. Minus the front it’s possible the Trade Winds would have taken the ships into the Gulf Stream and northward up the US coastline, making the landing in Florida or the Carolinas.
The Columbus luck wasn’t as good on the trip home, which was a little stormier.
