The coolest July on record in Indianapolis concludes with two more below-average days…but we’re getting closer. The high Monday was 72, it was 75 yesterday, and I think we’ll add another three degrees today, and repeat tomorrow.
I should say *rinse* and repeat. Once again today we will see some scattered showers and storms from mid to late afternoon. If you plan to stop by Colts Camp you will enjoy pleasant temperatures but still face the threat of sudden showers. The NFL is camping out in Anderson and upper level low pressure is camping out in eastern Canada. This pocket of very cold air in the middle and upper atmosphere helps to fuel the fire for storm mainly afternoon storm chances through Saturday, when the upper air pattern finally relaxes.
That pattern is familiar. A big “ridge” in the western US and Canada is the counterpoint to our upper level low, or “trough” in the east. The jet stream isn’t usually this wavy in late July. Most Indiana weather stations have seen just a couple days at 90+, and it has yet to happen officially in Indianapolis.
Meanwhile, the not-so-frozen tundra of northern Canada produced 90 degree weather yesterday in the Northwest Territories. We will warm to highs in the low 80s Friday through the weekend, and may even be near/above-normal a few days next week.
WIKI-POTEETIA: Two milestones today: the Indianapolis average high for the day is “84.” Yesterday – and for many weeks before that – it was 85. The descent begins. Also: the sunset time tonight is back to 9:00, on its way to the 8 o’clock hour. Tick, tick, tick…
INDY ALMANAC:
The average high today is 84 and the average low is 66. Records are 103 and 51. The sun rises at 6:42 and sets at 9:00.
