Summer stopped in just long enough to make race fans sweat yesterday, and now: another weather restart that rivals Jeff Gordon.
High temps today will be 10-15 degrees below average, and those highs will stay below average for the next seven days. We’ll fight clouds in the morning Monday and get some sun through the afternoon. Sunshine will be stronger in Lafayette and Terre Haute. It’ll feel like fall, with northwest winds gusting to 25mph.
The sky will be mostly clear tonight and we’ve got another decent shot at a record low. It will be down around 50 over much of central Indiana, and about 53 at the Indy Airport. The current record low of 51 goes back to 1881.
Our overall weather pattern is being driven by a “trough” (I’ll spare you THAT Speedway connection) of low pressure in the upper atmosphere that is moving toward Lake Erie. It won’t move much farther east over the next few days. This vigorous circulation will keep cool air moving in above us, and that contributes to chances of isolated to scattered afternoon showers and storms. Chances will only be about 20% Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 30% Wednesday afternoon.
Coverage of the storms should increase Saturday, with a chance all day. It will still be below average as *next* week begins. The Indy July average temperature through Sunday is 70.6 degrees. That would place us in a tie for the coolest July ever, from 1947. You do the math. That record is going down!
