Overall forecast remains the same. Bloomington is up to 32 (with a wintry mix,) but most of central Indiana is still in the 20s at the surface. There is – however – plenty of warm air above us allowing frozen precipitation to melt in that layer and freeze on some surface objects. Hopefully the temps there can get above freezing and stay there, and the mix could quickly switch to rain. Meanwhile: mixed precipitation is still likely for much of Central Indiana. The Lafayette area is most likely to to tilt toward snow with some sleet rather than freezing rain, sleet and snow.
12:00pm
Rain in Evansville and mixed precip now reported in the Haute.
11:00am
Snowing in Chicago. Visibility is down to a half mile with heavy snow reported in Champaign IL. I’ve seen reports of snow, sleet and freezing rain in Eastern Illinois. The precipitation shield will continue expanding eastward and northeastward. There are no changes to the forecast. Remember the biggest threat this afternoon will be from icing especially south of Lafayette to Kokomo. In those areas, and northward, the mix should tilt more to sleet and snow. An accumulation of 1-3 inches of snow/sleet is still expected in Indianapolis. The more freezing rain, the lower those totals. Oh–and the wind. It will continue to gust to 30 mph. Gusty wind and accumulating ice is not a good combo platter for your limbs or your lines.
9:00am
There’s already been some light mixed precipitation northeast of Indianapolis. It’s been awhile since we’ve dealt with the threat of mixed precipitation as well as snow. This chart (via the National Weather Service) is a good refresher about the various types of precipitation that are possible today:
