Minor Monday melting! Temps stayed near or above freezing around much of central Indiana overnight and early Monday morning. We’ll stay in the low to mid 30s today, and the wind won’t be as strong as it was yesterday.
Temperatures will fall into the 20s tonight, as snow returns in the evening and peaks overnight. Around an inch is expected by the start of Tuesday morning rush hour. As the snow is ending – Arctic air is just beginning. Again. Tuesday temps will tumble to the teens as the snow ends early in the morning, and then stay there all day. Thanks to northerly winds gusting to 25 mph tomorrow, wind chills will average 5 to 10 below Tuesday, and 10 to 15 below Tuesday Night. Some sun should return Tuesday midday and afternoon, although flurries could fly.
Another round of light snow – mainly north of Indy – threatens Wednesday afternoon and evening. Quieter Thursday and Friday, then snow chances again this weekend, and no end in sight to the persistent pattern. This pattern has meant DRY, WARM weather for much of the West. Snow pack is at a record low in the Sierras. And if you watched the Broncos game yesterday… it was beautiful in Denver, with temps in the mid 60s.
As cold as Winter’s been here.. it’s been much worse. Set the way back machine to this very date in 1985. Indy hit a morning low of -22. It was -25 in Richmond that morning and -24 in Lafayette and Muncie. The low in Bloomington was 21 below. Just yesterday we “celebrated” the anniversary of the coldest recorded temp in Indiana and Indianapolis. The low was -36(!) in New Whiteland. In Indy it was -27. It wouldn’t get that cold again until…two weeks ago today, when Indy fell to -15.
