More sub-zero temps look likely for the rest of January, but (so far!) we haven’t gone lower than what happened 20 years ago today.
The morning low in Indianapolis on January 19, 1994 was 27 below zero. (We hit -15 a few weeks ago.) Indy’s had over 10 days when the temperature was -20 degrees or colder since weather records began in the late 1800s.
Coldest temperature ever officially recorded in the state of Indiana is -36 degrees, on the same day in 1994, in New Whiteland, just south of Indy.
January 19 also chilled these cities:
-27 Richmond
-29 Muncie
BTW: The hottest temp ever in Indy was 106 degrees. It’s a record set in three years: 1901, 1934, and 1936. Many high temperature records of the Dust Bowl era still stand, but Indy got close during the hot summer of 2012. The high temp hit 105 on two different days.

25 years ago this Saturday 19 Jan. was the coldest recorded temp in Indiana. I remember it well. I’m retired from the Indianapolis Fire Dept. and we had 3 working fires between 12 AM till 8 am. that day. I was stationed at sta.14 30th Kenwood and we responded to apt. fire in the 3100 block of N. Meridian a little past midnight. A residence fire in the 3200 block of Collage Av. about 2:30 am and finally a vacant residence on E. 25th St. around 5 AM. We were relieved on the street at 8:00 I was the chauffeur on Truck 14 and we had to leave it on the scene at 25th Street because it was frozen to the street from all of the water spray. It is one day in my life I will never forget. 2 of the 10 men at station 14 have since passed away but the remaining 8 still talk about that horribly cold night in January. My son is on the dept. now and I remind him every year about it.
