If you thought that ball dropping in New York City was spectacular – wait ’til you see our temperatures next week. The coldest air in 20 years will ride the Siberian Express into central Indiana Monday through Wednesday.
Before that happens: there WILL be shoveling. Here are some updated totals from the first snow of the year:
5.0″ Beech Grove
5.0″ Terre Haute
5.0″ Greenfield
4.8″ Indianapolis
3.2″ Carmel
3.2″ New Castle
3.0″ Greencastle
3.0″ Lafayette
The snow chance diminishes by mid-morning in Lafayette, and just after the morning rush hours in Indy and Bloomington. It should end by late morning in Muncie and Richmond.
Winds will be gusty all day, however, and that’s why the Winter Weather Advisory rolls until 7 pm. North winds gusting to 30 mph could cause blowing and drifting snow on east-west roads. And no matter what road you’re on they will cause chills in the single digits all day. Visibility will also be limited by the blowing and drifting snow.
Friday will be cold – but dry. Saturday teases us with a one-day jump above the freezing mark.
That will be followed by heavy snow Sunday. Totals in excess of 6 inches are likely. THAT will be followed by bitterly cold air. Temps are unlikely to rise above zero ALL DAY Monday and Tuesday. Lows Monday night and Tuesday night could approach 20 below zero.
The last time Indianapolis was as cold as negative 10 was in January of 2009. The last time it was 15 degrees below or colder was January 21, 1994. Wind chills will be dangerously cold – around 35 below zero.
Maybe February will be quieter. We know it will be shorter
