INDYSTAR dot com this afternoon reported the passing of Bob Carter. He was 83. He died Sunday. He hosted “Nightmare Theater,” “Shock Theater,” and eventually simply “Sammy Terry” in one form or another from 1962 to 1989. When we first moved to Indy we lived a few blocks away from Bob’s day job. He ran a successful business called “Family Music Center,” a music store at 46th and Shadeland. One of Bob’s sons (David) is a veterinarian, and he’s been our cat Doc for years. The Sammy Terry character lives on with another one of Bob’s sons, Mark. You can leave your memories of Bob/Sammy at his site. In fact Mark/Sammy appeared on Pet Pals just last Halloween, giving me the distinction of working with two generations of Sammy. Tom Davis and I once hosted a prime-time movie special on WRTV and one of the bits we did was calling Sammy and asking for advice on how to be a good host. I often tell people one of my fondest Channel 4 memories: once a week I could look just beyond the camera shooting me at the weather maps (the magnetic weather maps, mind you) and see Sammy’s coffin, tombstones etc… all set up for the taping session the next morning. As I recall it was just northwest of the side of the studio where Cowboy Bob’s Corral would also appear once a week. Good times. RIP, Bob. And: Many…pleasant…NIGHTMARES. (Insert the laugh.)]]>
