Here’s a very cool (and somewhat mesmerizing) way to visualize surface winds across the country. It’s a project by Google computer scientists. Click hint.fm/wind and see animated streams of air come together, flow apart, and accelerate and decelerate. The map uses National Weather Service data, and refreshes hourly.
The attached snapshot was assembled by Jason Samenow from The Washington Post.
Jason notes “how the swirls in the wind map coincide with the areas of low pressure and how the strongest winds – indicated by the densest concentration of streams – coincide with the regions where temperatures are changing most dramatically.”
