A couple of meteorology milestones today. Indianapolis should cross the 20 inch mark for year-to-date precipitation, and we should also be able to call this the wettest month of this thirsty year.
Up ’til now the wettest month had been March, with 4.14 inches of precip. Going into today the August total is 3.92. I’m forecasting about another half an inch.
We have whittled our year-to-date rain deficit “down” to 7.52 inches. The 2012 total is 19.90 inches. The normal is 27.42. We were above normal at this point last year, with 30.67 inches.
There’s a good chance of morning showers, then a break that could feature some sun, then another round of showers and storms in the afternoon and evening. Severe weather should be confined to southern Indiana & Illinois as well as Tennessee, Kentucky and Missouri.
Most highs this week will below average, with Wednesday and Thursday the hottest, in the mid 80s. No triple digits, but never say never. The latest 100-degree reading for the Indianapolis area occurred on September 15 back in 1939.
HOWEVER: (Don’t read this out loud-you might jinx it)… The latest 8-14 day forecast for August 20-26 indicates temperatures near or below normal, and precipitation at normal. Mum’s the word. (Isn’t it about time to plant them?)
