What does one of the warmest mornings in Indy history feel like?
Today.
The “highest low” ever was in Indianapolis was 85, from June 28, 1874. This morning’s unofficial low as of 7am is 82. The average HIGH is 85 for today.
A cold front (Yes, it’s a relative term) drops southward across Indiana today. It’ll move back up north of us Wednesday as a warm front. So the temperature will whipsaw between really hot and REALLY REALLY hot.
Today’s clouds and storm chances should keep most of central Indiana to the low 90s. Smaller chances and taller temps around Bloomington and Terre Haute, where there’s already a HEAT ADVISORY.
The sun will be stronger statewide Wednesday, and a HEAT ADVISORY is already in place for all of the central Indiana, with humidity high and more triple digit temperatures expected.
That’s what happened Monday. The official high in Indianapolis was 102. That tied a daily high temperature record from one of those Dust Bowl Summers…1934. It was also 102 in Terre Haute and an even 100 in Lafayette.
Indy has tied or broken 9 daily high temperature records since late June. It was the 8th day of 100 or above temperatures in Indianapolis.
The top two summers for the century mark :
–12 days in 1936
–10 days in 1934
Up until now the biggest recent summer for triple digits was 1988, when it happened five times.
Monday was the 36th 90+ day of the Summer of 2012 in Indianapolis. The average is 15 and the record is 58.
There is a slight risk of severe weather today. Biggest threats are large hail and big wind. Storm chances are slim Wednesday, and then more severe weather is possible Thursday.
