Indiana’s Weather For Friday

July 20, 2012

seven-day-indy-scaled

The precipitation party has passed. Clouds will decrease during the day Friday, with humidity decreasing this evening. Saturday will be hot and dry, and the muggy weather will creep back in on Sunday. If nothing else, we should stay out of the 90s today. Right back into the mid 90’s next week.

Scattered showers and storms Wednesday and Thursday stayed the longest over Hancock County. As much as 4 inches fell around Fortville. Generally over an inch fell over much of northern and eastern Indiana. Amounts were smaller west and southwest of Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis Airport ended up with .68″ from the two-day period. Fun with numbers: Indy had 7.5 times as much precip in two days then it had in the month and half preceding it.

Parched soils will remain dry after receiving up to an inch of rainfall. Rainfall of up to 2 inches will not even make the soil muddy or cause any small streams to flow according to recent observations from southern Indiana. The Weather Service estimates that we would need a regular weekly rainfall of about an inch to erase the drought.

Unfortunately the three-month outlook from the Climate Prediction Center indicates at least a slight chance of below normal precipitation through October. Trick or treat.

The rain wasn’t the only thing Thursday.

A wind gust of 72 mph was reported in Mccordsville. There was a 66 mph wind gust at the Mount Comfort Airport, also off to the east.

Smaill hail fell, and lots of lightning was reported, but even the rough stuff wasn’t dampening rain enthusiasm: From my Twitter feed:

@barbaraepperson: @PaulPoteet Hubby’s nifty rain gauge measured 1/2″ this a.m. and 1-1/2″ this evening near 79th and Sunnyside on NE side
