Over 35 percent of the state is now in a “severe or extreme drought,” according to the latest Drought Monitor issued Thursday morning. All of central Indiana is now in a “moderate drought.” The moderate drought area almost doubled since last week.
The northeast and southwest corners continue to be hardest hit. The Evansville area is in a extreme drought. Least affected are southeast Indiana, and northwest Indiana, a region that saw localized heavy rain last weekend.
Possible precipitation today will do little to stop the overall trend, which still looks drier than average through at least the 4th Of July. After the passage of a cold front today no precip is expected through NEXT week.

The graphic at http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/DM_state.htm?IN,MW clearly shows that 36.31% of Indiana is under a severe/extreme category drought… NOT over 40%.

My fault. The typo’s been corrected to “35” instead of “40.”
