A few showers move through the southwest half of the state Monday morning and midday, courtesy of another little upper level wave. You can wave goodbye to it by afternoon drive time, and then we face several dry days in a row. Sprinklers on stun!
Did you notice the bright moon over the weekend? That was the build up to the “Full Strawberry Moon” that peaked earlier today. Mrs. Poteet and I left a wedding reception late Saturday and were amazed by the moonlight. I should have done the George Bailey-thing and offered to lasso it for her. (And dance by the light of the moon….)
Couple of other sky shows to note: One happened early Monday, one comes tomorrow late afternoon.
The Moon passed directly behind the Earth this morning. A big chunk of the Moon’s surface fell under our shadow, and so we had a lunar eclipse that peaked at 7:04am. Clouds got in the way over much of our area.
Clouds shouldn’t be a problem Tuesday evening for the last “transit” of Venus to occur in your lifetime. Transits of Venus across the disk of the Sun are among the rarest of planetary alignments. It won’t happen again until 2117. Even I will be gone by then, which by the way will create a lot of job openings.
Only six such Transit events have occurred since the invention of the telescope (1631, 1639, 1761, 1769, 1874, 1882, & 2004). Venus will cross the face of the sun, appearing as a black dot on the sun’s bright disk. For Indianapolis the transit will begin at 6:04 PM and continue through sunset. Obviously you can’t look directly at the sun to watch. Holcomb Observatory at Butler will be open June 5th from 5:30 to 9:30PM if you’d like your Transit via Telescope. And here’s a link for a live webcast of the Transit from Mauna Kea Observatories starting at 5:45pm Indiana time.
