Earlier this week I was desperately seeking drama in this awesome weather pattern, and opined that there was a slight chance of showers early Wednesday. That happened, but it was in South Bend. My motto: always be right….SOMEwhere. Most of the energy with a cold front moving through Indiana today is concentrated to the north. Winds with the front yesterday gusted over 40mph in Janesville and Racine Wisconsin and big storms roared all the way down to northern Illinois. There is a slight risk of severe weather today in New England along the front.
The Indiana portion of that front should stay quiet, although the southern quarter of the state might see a scattered shower or storm later this afternoon. The front will be sliding southward there at just the point of maximum surface heating for the day.
We will get a small break from the heat today, with highs in the 70s instead of yesterday’s 80. All signals still point to a hot and humid weekend. If you are running the GeistHalf Marathon like me…start drinking water now, lol. I don’t think the watercolors will run in the rain at the Broad Ripple Art Fair but I do think they’ll sell a lot of cold drinks. And you’ll sweat out the race for Pole position Saturday even if you’re name isn’t Roger Penske.
Our next chance for storms doesn’t come until Monday. As far as severe weather goes…where did it go? One thing’s for sure: it’ll be back eventually. And just in case it comes back to Joplin Missouri, some people will be ready. The local paper there reports more than a thousand safe rooms have been installed in buildings since last May. About fifteen businesses are busy building in the area. A couple of years ago there were just five companies. A safe room can cost thousands of dollars.
